NWARC is one of seven off-campus research centers in the Department of Research Centers. The position is one of two tenure-track positions at NWARC. NWARC consists of 225 irrigated and dryland acres and is well-equipped with modern field plot equipment, laboratory equipment, facilities, and greenhouse space. The major commodities include cereals, forages, oilseed, and pulse crops. The research center is located 10 miles from Flathead Lake - the largest fresh water lake in the western U.S., and 45 miles from Glacier National Park. The area features a wide range of outdoor summer and winter recreational opportunities. Salary Commensurate with experience Closing date of competition November 19,2019 or until a suitable candidate pool is established and job is accepted Date position available Spring 2020 Description of duties Develop a nationally recognized field research program addressing biotic factors that limit the economic potential and environmental sustainability of crop and forage-based production systems in northwestern Montana. Potential research could include investigating northwestern Montana cropping systems; applying an integrated pest management approach to weeds and other biotic stressors in cropping systems. This research program will include annual variety development field trials in collaboration with plant breeding programs at MSU. The incumbent is expected to cooperate with all programs at NWARC, other public-sector scientists, extension personnel, farmers, private industry, advisory groups, and commodity organizations to develop research priorities and assist in developing management recommendations. Expectations for scholarship include publication in refereed journals and reviewed materials and presentation at scientific and producer meetings. Development of popular press materials, and teaching of discipline-related topics to accommodate student demand are encouraged. Securing extramural funds from state, regional and national sources, as well as the agricultural industry, is required. Conduct of research expectations include: on-station, off-station, and "field" scale research trials in cooperation with scientists, producers, and extension agents of counties served by the NWARC. Qualifications sought Required:1. Ph.D. degree in agronomy, crop science, weed science, range science or closely related field.2. Demonstrated experience in agronomic field crops and biotic stress field research.3. Excellent written and oral communication skills.4. Demonstrated experience in planning, designing, and implementing field research.Preferred:1. Experience in weed control/integrated pest management.2. Demonstrated record of publications in refereed journals commensurate with training and experience.3. Demonstrated ability to acquire grants.4. Postdoctoral experience.5. Demonstrated knowledge of crops and production practices associated with the Pacific Northwest and Northern Great Plains regions of the United States.6. Ability to cooperate with researchers and others in the agricultural community.
